Belmont World Film 2015 presents the US premier of COURT
May 3, 2015 at 7:00 pm–9:30 pm
For ArtWeek, Belmont World Film presents a special East Coast premiere of the Venice Film Festival winner COURT, about the trial of a wrongly accused singer in Mumbai, India, followed by a discussion led by Harvard Law School Resident Fellow Nicholson Robinson. Nicholson knows his way around the Indian court system; he clerked for the Chief Justice of India’s Supreme Court and was a senior fellow at the Center for Policy Research in New Delhi.
For 14 years Belmont World Film has provided a cinematic “passport to the world,” featuring area premieres of award-winning international films paired with topical speakers and cultural performances and cuisine. COURT is part of “Secrets & Lies,” the theme of this year’s international film series of eight films. The film follows the trial of an aging folk singer in Mumbai, who is tried on charges of abetment of suicide for performing an inflammatory song that might have incited a sewage worker to kill himself. As the trial unfolds, the personal lives of the case’s lawyers and judge are observed while the context of the trial itself serves as a way to explore a number of pressing sociopolitical issues facing Indian society.
