Cardamom Quartet: Open Salon
April 29, 2017 at 4:00 pm–5:00 pm
During the 2017-2018 season, Jamaica Plain-based Cardamom Quartet has committed to performing music exclusively by women. The norm of concert programs lacking in women composers persists, and Cardamom wants to challenge ourselves, our audiences, and our music community to imagine alternative realities. Selections from three of the season’s programmed works will be performed at this preview concert held at Jamaica Plain’s We Are Hair salon. This event places Cardamom Quartet in a unique environment for classical music performance. The hair salon is a gathering place where conversation is welcome, and that conversational element will be a vital part of this preview concert. The pieces, by Fanny Hensel, Caroline Shaw, and Gabriela Lena Frank, span 175 years of classical music composed by women. Cardamom will share stories from the lives of the composers and in between each short selection, Cardamom and listeners will talk together about their observations and questions. At this preview concert during ArtWeek, Cardamom Quartet will put a special emphasis on conversations with and among audience members. Chairs will be arranged in a variety of proximities to the performers and the audience will be encouraged to change their vantage point between works.
This event is free; suggested donation at the door of $10 – $15 is requested.
