Dancing Elotes Experience
October 5, 2016 at 2:30 pm–6:30 pm
Veronica Robles Cultural Center (VROCC) presents Dancing Elotes a new arts-integrated community project with support from the New England Foundation for the Arts’ Creative City Program, with funding from The Barr Foundation.
Local youth team will sell elotes (corn on the cob Latin-Style) from a traditional bike cart that is used on the streets in Mexico and Central America, as a literal and conceptual vehicle for cross-cultural culinary, dance, and sculptural experiences. The cart was shipped from Mexico with the support of Consul of Mexico in Boston Emilio Rabasa.
Dancing Elotes project honors the lives of the young victims of street violence. One of the goals of this project is to link organizations, artists, and individuals to engage in a conversation about art and raise awareness about the importance of the appreciation of ethnic diversity among the general community.
Special for ArtWeek, Dancing Elotes will offer free public workshops at the East Boston Farmers Market where participants will learn La Danza del Permiso Veronica Robles (to request permission from mother earth to work the soil) and use the husks and cobs from the elotes to help dress up a large-scale sculpture of traditional Latino dancers by Carolyn Lewenberg.
