Join us for a behind-the-scenes look and listen as some of Boston’s finest musicians, The Orchestra and Chorus of Emmanuel Music, prepares Bach Cantata BWV 103, Ihr werdet weinen und heulen, conducted by Artistic Director Ryan Turner. The audience will hear the rehearsal for the following day’s performance and observe the process, and techniques that enable Emmanuel Music to present the weekly Bach Cantata Series. Emmanuel Music has been performing Bach cantatas in a traditional liturgical setting since its late founder Craig Smith began the tradition in 1970. Emmanuel Music was the first organization in the U.S. to complete the performance of Bach’s 200 known cantatas in a church setting. This is a tradition that continues to this day.

After the rehearsal, there will be an informal talk-back.  There is no charge for admission, but reservations are requested.

Emmanuel Music’s core is Johann Sebastian Bach and his cantatas. The ensemble performs a cantata, each week, during the academic season. It is unusual to see other ensembles that perform together so often and in such an immersive way. The cantatas at Emmanuel Music are performed on modern instruments which creates a different sound than the works performed on period instruments which is a standard practice today.
