FROM SPAIN TO CUBA AND BACK
Habanera, Zarzuela, Rum and Cigars
From music to dance, architecture to food, commerce and travel between Spain and colonial Cuba resulted in a dynamic synthesis of the arts and culture of both countries. The Boston Arts Consort explores this exciting relationship with performances of Spanish music inspired by Cuban rhythms and themes, and Cuban works influenced by Spanish forms, including excerpts from the great Cuban zarzuela, “Cecilia Valdés”, a story of passion and race. Discover the glorious colonial architecture of Cuban-inspired Barcelona and Spanish-inspired Trinidad, enjoy the culinary delights that were born of this union, and sing with us the famous “La Paloma”.
With Linda Papatopoli, director and pianist; Margarita Campos, lecturer; Eve Costarelli, flamenco artist; Christian Figueroa, tenor; Luis De Haro, chef; Liz Leehey, clarinet; Roberto Rios, flamenco guitar; Clara Sandler, mezzo-soprano.
