Provincetown Art Association and Museum 460 Commercial Street Provincetown, MA 02657 United States

PAAM invites the public to a Gallery Conversation with exhibiting artist Constance Black and curator Elisabeth Pearl to discuss Constance Black: Toward Abstraction on view at PAAM April 8-May 30, 2016.. This Gallery Conversation is free and open to the public.

Constance Black came to Provincetown in 1950 to study at the Cape Cod School of Art under Henry Hensche. By the 1960’s the town was buzzing with new ideas and art schools and although her background was academic black was bitten by the new teachings. She plunged into abstraction mentored primarily by the painter Jim Forsberg.

This exhibition focuses on Black’s newest work which shifts to geometric and minimal forms inspired by an interest in the mysteries offered by spiritual belief systems and concepts. Her baha’i faith has provided black with an aesthetic that states there can be no break between nature, art, science, religion, or personal life. This belief is an ultimate unity-visualized as a central focus or enclosing sphere.
