International Jazz Day: A Moveable Celebration with NEC Bands
April 30, 2016 at 10:00 am–10:30 pm
Traveling in colorfully marked minivans, NEC student bands hit the road to carry the celebration of International Jazz Day (IJD) to Boston’s neighborhoods, with a detour to Cambridge. Keep your eyes and ears open for pop-up performances in public places from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Town squares and plazas, bus and train stations, shopping malls, parks and parking lots are all on the itinerary. Talk with the band and take home a flyer telling the story behind UNESCO’s proclamation of IJD in 2012 and the annual celebrations since then. Find out why jazz is a symbol of freedom and democracy worldwide and is called an international language.
A free evening concert (8:30 – 10:30 PM) featuring faculty and students at NEC’s Brown Hall tops off the International Jazz Day celebration with performances embodying the ongoing dialogue between jazz and other musics around the globe.
Be sure to join JazzBoston for other Jazz Week events celebrating jazz of all styles all over Greater Boston from April 22 to May 1.
