Intro to Chinese Characters and Calligraphy
October 1, 2016 at 2:00 pm–4:00 pm
The Chinese Culture Connection is very pleased to provide an introduction to traditional Chinese philosophy through its language and calligraphy. Learn some Chinese characters and how to practice calligraphy, which will not only give you some insights into the essence of Chinese philosophy, but may well lead to the discovery of your artistic talent!
As in many ancient civilizations, the origins of Chinese characters were derived from nature; they can be considered symbols of a universal language. However, most cultures have changed their written languages into words that are composed of what we call letters of an alphabet. Chinese characters have maintained their original pictographic nature. Over time, these characters have evolved into today’s written characters, which contain profound meanings. Because of the unique nature of the Chinese character, Chinese calligraphy is not only a form of intellectual communication, it is also an artistic form of expression. Chinese calligraphy and brush painting have been practiced for centuries, and are still highly respected as examples of National Cultural Art Forms. Practitioners of calligraphy and brush painting consider their discipline different from other forms of art.
