Inventing a Landscape
May 9, 2015 at 10:00 am–12:00 pm
After describing the creation of the panoramic paintings of the current show, The Invented Landscape, painter Nancy Sableski will ask the audience to help her compose a new landscape painting by selecting and ordering printed photos of the Arboretum taken from her cell phone. Nancy will invite the audience to share ideas about components of an interesting landscape, considering foreground, middle ground, and background, as well as a horizon line, palette, light and dark, and disjunctions as desirable features of the painting. After sketching out the idea, Nancy will demonstrate how she starts to make a painting from disconnected photographic images.
The artist will have shellacked Masonite panels on display so that viewers can see how the image is affected by putting oil paint down on a dark, slick surface.
