Wood, Magnets, Playdough and Space
April 29, 2017 at 3:00 pm–4:30 pm
Can you pack 2D shapes together so that there are no gaps or overlaps? Can you do it in three dimensions too? Join designer/woodworker Jane Kostick for hands-on exploration of repeating patterns, negative space, and some of the fundamental geometric shapes underlying her mathematical artwork. Get to know these intriguing shapes via playdough, puzzles, and play.
A variety of wooden sticks and blocks will be provided, which kids (and adults) can use as molds by filling them with playdough to make geometric shapes called polyhedra. We will use fishing line to dissect the shapes to discover surprising geometric relationships. Depending on the weather, this activity will be held either outdoors or in the studio or home of designers Jane and John Kostick. Please stay tuned for any last-minute updates.
